ABTT search for Technician of the Year 2019 ‘Star’

The ABTT’s annual search to find its Technician of the Year is gathering pace and if you know of an outstanding individual working in our industry today who deserves recognition for their contribution to the art of technical theatre, then now is the time to act. Deadline: Friday, 31 May 2019.

The Award is one of the most important accolades the Association bestows, as it recognises the achievement of an individual who is still in the heart of their career but who has consistently delivered technical excellence.

Open to ABTT members and non-members alike, recipients have usually pursued full employment in a backstage or production management role for at least 10 years and have predominantly worked on the presentation of live performance in places of entertainment or on theatrical experiences in non-conventional spaces.

Their qualities will include not only a mastery of their chosen discipline or craft but also recognition as an expert practitioner by their peers, having achieved and promoted best practice throughout their career: in doing so they will have made a significant contribution to technical excellence in the delivery of world class performance.

Previous winners include Charlotte Lockyer (2017), a Senior Automation Engineer at TAIT, who now also serves as a Trustee on the ABTT’s Council and the 2018 winner Malcolm Glanville – Rambert’s legendary Technical Director.

Malcolm’s appointment as Technician of the Year for 2018 was acknowledged last December, when he received his hook-clamp trophy and certificate at the Royal Academy of Music during the Association’s AGM. At the event a citation from Christopher Bruce, CBE, choreographer, performer and former Artistic Director of Rambert Dance Company was read which included the lines. “Your service to the Rambert company has been remarkable and always produced the highest of standards, sometimes under the most difficult of circumstances. Your accumulated knowledge and expertise are now extraordinary and recognized throughout your profession and we honour you”.

Nominations for 2019 can be submitted direct to the ABTT Office (office@abtt.org.uk) or through a simple online form, with the winner due to be announced after the close of the first day of the ABTT Theatre Show, Wednesday 5 June – Thursday 6 June 2019, at Alexandra Palace London (subject to the recipient’s availability).
