Contact, Manchester

Contact Theatre opened in 1965 as The University Theatre and was home to The Century Theatre Company (who relocated to The Duke’s, Lancaster) and 69 Theatre Company (who became The Royal Exchange Theatre Company).  In 1972 Contact became home of the Manchester Young People’s Theatre as part of the University.

In 1999 the theatre was substantially remodeled to the building we see today.  This work resulted in its low energy natural ventilation and passive cooling, giving us the iconic Contact chimneys.  In 2013 Contact achieved a DEC rating of B, which has now become A, putting it in the top 1% of Greater Manchester’s energy efficient public buildings.

Never satisfied, Contact are redeveloping again.  Technical aspects of the redesign will be looked after by Theatre Consultants, Theatre Projects.  They will be present at the meeting to explain their brief and solutions.  Members will also be able to take tours of technical areas of the theatre.
