Alternative Theatre in Westminster: a Virtual Tour, by Dr Susan Croft

alternative tour

‘Alternative Theatre in Westminster: a Virtual Tour’, allows you to explore via Google maps some of the many key sites and venues in the borough, discover why it became such a vital centre of innovative theatre. Copiously illustrated with slides of flyers and photos of companies and shows from the period, the talk includes extracts from plays and oral history interviews and original video.

The tour includes Inter-Action’s Ambiance lunchtime theatre club in Queensway, and their staging of Britain’s first Black Theatre, their wanderings in exile via Norman Beaton’s Green Banana Club to the Almost Free Theatre in Rupert St, where Britain’s first women’s theatre season took place in 1974 and first gay theatre season in 1975. It includes the work of the ground-breaking Soho Poly, that later became the Soho Theatre and the ILEA’s Cockpit Theatre and its importance as a centre for theatre-in-education. It also looks at the ICA’s controversial socialist theatre season and its later importance as a centre for experimental theatre and features slides of an array of companies who performed there. Being virtual, it can be done from the comfort of a seat.
