Showlight is a unique colloquium that is held every 4 years in a different location. Showlight 2017 will take place in the Renaissance city of Florence, Italy in the scenic location of the Palazzo dei Congressi between 20-23 May. Its main focus is its eclectic Papers Schedule which aims to be both fun and informative. Showlight also places a strong emphasis on networking amongst those who love lighting in all its forms. It is one of the few international events organised specifically for lighting professionals by lighting professionals across the performance, television, film, architectural and event worlds. It gives a unique opportunity for lighting people of all disciplines and levels of expertise to mix and exchange ideas and stories.
There is a history of Showlight on the website, and even a timeline if you would like to follow this further. http://www.showlight.org/brief-history-of-showlight/
The general format is that everybody arrives in Florence on the Saturday evening and gathers for drinks at a welcome evening. The next morning starts bright and early with the conference on the Sunday, with speakers presenting 20-minute papers in groups of three, followed by a Q&A session at the end of each session. There is also a Panel Session where a panel of three lighting programmers will explore the changing role they fill and how they fit within the lighting structure, examining how this vital role varies in different genres of lighting and how they got to where they are.
For the first time ever, there will be simultaneous translation of all papers into Italian. The confirmed Speaker Schedule is online (www.showlight.org/speaker-schedule)
Coffee, tea and lunch breaks are scheduled throughout the day, during which time, delegates can explore the exhibition and talk to the manufacturers who have stands there.
This year we are very happy to be hosting the Neal Preston photographic exhibition from the Lightpower Collection which is a collection of around 70 images from Preston’s career as one of the leading Rock and Roll photographers, so delegates can also look around this during the breaks.
Showlight also hosts a small tradeshow – this year with 42 Exhibitors (listed online at http://www.showlight.org/exhibitor-list/). Each of the exhibitors sponsors a lighting student for the duration of the show, to help on the stand and, more importantly, to give them the opportunity to network with industry professionals! Most exhibitors also host company dinners on the Sunday evening so every delegate to Showlight will be taken to one of Florence’s many excellent restaurants in good company!
The conference continues on Monday morning, and in the afternoon there is a traditional half-day of visits to places of local interest. There is a full list of these visits on the website and delegates will be asked to choose which trips they would like to go on. This year there is a choice of 22 trips all together! http://www.showlight.org/social-programme/
The day ends with the legendary Gala Dinner – which is held in a secret location which will not be disclosed until the day!
The final day is Tuesday which is another full day of papers presentations before everybody departs (or spends a few extra days in Florence if they choose!) in the evening.
Claypaky, the show’s main sponsor, is offering the opportunity for delegates to visit the Claypaky factory after the show on the Wednesday. Places are limited and details can be found on the website at http://www.showlight.org/claypaky-visit.pdf
Finally, Showlight is a not-for-profit event organised entirely by volunteers, and we wouldn’t be able to do it without the support of our sponsors. This year’s Main Sponsor is Claypaky, with other sponsors as follows: Diamond Sponsor Oasis Enterprises, Gold sponsors Robe, Osram and Eyetidy, Silver sponsors White Light, DTS, Lee Filters and MA Lighting, and Bronze sponsors ETC, d3 technologies, Charcoalblue, ACT Lighting and LSC Lighting, alongside supporters, LSI and PLASA Media.
As Showlight gets closer, delegates are encouraged to register because hotels and flights are filling up fast! In addition to the standard Full Delegate tickets, we also offer the option of Papers Only tickets, which allow delegates to attend the papers sessions with tea, coffee and lunch breaks, without the social aspects of the dinners and trips. This might appeal to the local delegates who are familiar with Florence or do not have time to visit for the whole 3 days, or those who do not speak English but are still interested in listening to the speakers.
Delegates can register for Showlight via the link on the website http://www.showlight.org/registration/ There are also a number of rooms set aside for Showlight delegates at discounted rates, which can also be booked via the website using the code given there: http://www.showlight.org/why-visit/travel-and-hotels/
