JOB TITLE                                Chief Electrician

VENUE                                    Sunderland Empire Theatre

RESPONSIBLE TO                    Technical Manager

RESPONSIBLE FOR                  Deputy Chief Electrician and Casual Technicians

Main Purpose

Responsibility for the stage lighting of all performances and related activities within agreed schedules and budgets. To work as part of the Back of House Stage Technical Department in all duties relating to technical operations of The Empire Theatre, including shows, hires and events, fit-ups and get-outs as well as the maintenance of the theatre and building systems back of house. To assist the Technical Manager to manage and develop the technical services for the theatre and to deputise for the Technical Manger in his absence.

In general terms you will ensure that The Empire Theatre is maintained in excellent condition for all visitors, performers and staff and you will demonstrate high standards of customer care at all times. The Empire Theatre is a Grade II* listed building and you will be mindful at all times that any maintenance or additional works may be subject to listed building consent.

Person Specification

Essential

  • 2-3 years’ experience working fulltime in  professional theatre in a similar role
  • A Production or Technical Theatre qualification or the equivalent experience
  • GCSEs at least Grade C in English and Maths or equivalent
  • Good working knowledge of technical theatre with an in depth knowledge of stage lighting and electrics.
  • Experience with operation and programming of  lighting consoles
    • Competence in the knowledge and application of Health & Safety regulations
    • Proven leadership skills.
  • Excellent team working skills
  • Experience of working with touring productions
  • Experience of portable appliance testing of theatre electrical equipment and associated maintenance/repairs
    • Good IT skills, including the use of MS Office, Word and Excel
    • Flexibility to work unsocial hours and weekends to meet business requirements
    •  A passion for and an active interest in live theatre and lighting design

Desirable

  • 17th or 18th Edition
  • PAT trained
  • Pyrotechnics training
  • Working at Height
  • Rescue at Height
  • Experience with the programming and operation of ETC consoles.
  • Knowledge of BECTU regulations
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations
  • First Aid at Work Qualification

Key Responsibilities

  • To ensure the safe and efficient running of the lighting department within The Empire Theatre.
  • In conjunction with the Stage Manager to ensure a safe and efficient get-in, fit-up, performance and get-out of all productions, in accordance with the TMA Code of Conduct.
  • Be responsible for the stage lighting and all temporary and permanent electrical installations.
  • To work with the Technical Manager to implement planned maintenance and preventative maintenance to the theatres back of house electrical infrastructure.
  • To work closely with the Stage Manager, ensuring all health and safety requirements and business objectives are met.
  • To work with the Technical Manager to ensure that the department remains within set budgets and to assist in the planning of future budgets.
  • To maintain the electrical stock of consumables and in conjunction with the Technical Manager, to be responsible for the ordering of materials and services required in accordance with the theatre’s approved procedures.
  • To deputise for the Technical Manager in his absence.
  • Ensure that all show specific staffing requirements are met, scheduled in an efficient and cost effective manner.
  • To design lighting when necessary for community groups, solo performances and others where the theatre is obliged to provide such facilities.
  • To assist the Stage Manager and his team if required.
  • Be responsible and ensure that annual PAT testing of all back of house electrical equipment is completed on time.
  • To work closely with visiting companies to ensure their technical needs are achieved and smooth running of the performances.
  • To work as part of the Technical Department to ensure all building and equipment maintenance is safe and complies with current legislation. Ensuring at all times the building is presented to the highest standard.
  • To ensure that Risk Assessments reviews are carried out on a regular basis and where necessary updated.
  • To ensure that staff time sheets, show advance recharge costs and final recharge costs are completed on time.
  • To recruit, train and manage the Lighting Department teams’ performance to ensure business and departmental objectives are achieved in consultation with the Technical Manager.

Other

  • To adhere to all Company and Health and Safety procedures to minimise the risk of injury and accidents.
  • To attend meetings as necessary to support the Technical Team, Empire Theatre and ATG.
  • To attend training courses as required for the post and further professional development.
  • At times, and as the business requires, work at other ATG venues.
  • To complete any other delegated duty that assists the company in achieving its business objectives.
