The Yard is a multi-award winning 110-seat theatre, bar and music venue, located in a repurposed warehouse in Hackney Wick. Founded by Artistic Director Jay Miller in 2011, The Yard has established itself as a theatrical necessity with a reputation for upending theatrical traditions, as well as one of London’s most diverse and exciting venues for experiencing new music at late night events every weekend. The Yard is at the centre of its community, reaching thousands of local people every year through programmes in local schools and the community centre it runs in Hackney Wick, Hub67. From here it runs creative projects for young people aged 4-19 years to make bold work for The Yard’s stage, and offers regular activities and resources for local people.

The Yard seeks an experienced Freelance Theatre Technician to support the in-house Theatre Technician part-time on the effective delivery of an exciting season of spring theatre and music programme as the department restructures in 2019.
● Excellent technical delivery of get ins and get outs.
● Casual team management and briefing to support delivery of running shows.
● Providing technical expertise to visiting companies.
● Furthering the company’s plans to improve and maintain technical equipment.

● SEX SEX MEN MEN by Pecs Drag Kings – 26 February – 16 March
Pecs Drag Kings create a new show mixing drag and cabaret and exploring sexuality and gender.
● The Crucible , by Arthur Miller – 27 March – 11 May
Arthur Miller’s urgent account of a community torn apart by the power of fear, directed by The Yard’s Artistic Director and founder Jay Miller.
● In house production – 27 May – 30 June
Premiere of a new play by an award-winning american writer.

Yard contact: Finance & Operations Manager.
Fee: £3,000-£6,000 +VAT, if applicable (dependent on hours agreed and experience).
Engagement: anticipated to be 16 to 32 hours per week on average across the period of the engagement depending on availability and the needs of the programme. Flexible hours as agreed in advance with the Finance & Operations Manager.
Period of engagement: 11th March – 30th June. We encourage applications from suitable candidates who can only commit to a portion of the engagement.


● Good knowledge of lighting & sound procedures in a producing theatre and bar/venue environment.
● Proven experience of lighting control systems, with extensive knowledge of programming on ETC systems.
● Experience in stage lighting, including the rigging and focusing of luminaires, and other equipment, in a producing theatre environment.
● Experience of programming and operating digital sound control systems with specific experience on Yamaha digital audio equipment.
● Team leadership skills.
● Knowledge of fundamental electrical practice and theory.
● A sympathetic approach to creative concepts and the ability to realise the requirements of creative teams and directors.
● Experience of maintenance and repair of lighting fixtures and sound equipment.
● A practical knowledge of LOLER, PUWER and other relevant Health and Safety regulations.
● The ability to communicate with staff at all levels.
● The ability to work well under pressure.
● Good communication skills – both written and verbal.

● Prior knowledge of The Yard and its programme.
● Formal technical theatre qualification.
