Have the debate on what makes a good theatre

The Theatres Trust is the National Advisory Public Body for Theatres

Local authorities are required by Government Order to consult the Trust when considering planning applications affecting land on which there is a theatre. This applies to all theatre buildings, old or new, and regardless of whether or not they are still in use as theatres, in other uses or disused. The Trust’s main objective is to safeguard theatre use or the potential for such use, but it also provides expert advice on design, conservation, property and planning matters to theatre operators, local authorities and official bodies and also runs an information service. Its archives include records of over 3,500 theatre buildings and some 30,000 images, as well as plans and other documents. The Trust has a small professional staff supported by consultants and members of its Friends organisation, and works closely with other official bodies and voluntary groups.

The Trust was set up by Parliament in 1976 and its 15 Trustees are appointed by the Government. They also serve as Trustees of the Theatres Trust Charitable Fund which was set up in 1977 to support the Trust in its work.

Start exploring theatres with our online illustrated introduction to theatre buildings, their history and evolution.  Stay up-to-date with theatres news and find out more about any UK theatre with our comprehensive Theatres Database and digital Image Library.
