ABTT NEWS:
ABTT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2019

Following a multi-million pound refurbishment by award-winning architects Haworth Tompkins, Battersea Arts Centre's stunning Grand Hall is now open. Following the AGM and Council Elections announcement, a tour of the restored Theatre will take place.

The Grand Hall, beautifully restored following a devastating fire in 2015, is an event space unlike any other. With potential to hold from 100 to 800 guests in a variety of formats, the Grand Hall is as functional as it is unique. The stunning lattice ceiling, hiding an advanced technical infrastructure, and remaining original features from its rich 125 year history, make it ideal for hosting events that push boundaries. Large windows surrounding the hall allow natural daylight to flood in or clients can opt to use our blackout blinds and create their own stunning lighting effect within the space.

RSVP by Monday 28th October 2019 to the ABTT office via phone on 027 242 9200 or email.

Out with the old and in with the new!

The ABTT will soon be launching its brand new website and we’re excited to let you know about one of the fantastic features it is going to have.

To make sure that your theatre is included on the new ABTT site please download the form here.

All the information you provide will go towards ensuring that there is a comprehensive list of Technical Details for Theatres in the UK – allowing touring productions to find all the information they need in one place.

Be aware that even if you are listed on the current website – you will need to submit a new form in order to appear on the New website launching next month as previous details will not be transferred across!

This book documents and celebrates Britain’s contemporary theatre architecture. It is about the conception, design, and delivery of spaces for drama between 2008 and 2018, a period of economic recession and financial austerity which has nonetheless seen a significant number of well received theatre-building projects. Intended not only for theatre enthusiasts but  individuals and organisations contemplating a capital project of their own, but also provides detailed ‘contemporary histories’ of ten recent projects.

New Release: Modern Playhouses
ABTT Members: £59.00

Modern Playhouses is the first detailed study of the major programme of theatre-building in Britain between the 1950s and the 1980s. It focuses on the ideas which shaped their conception, design, and reception, rather than the looks of the buildings themselves. It sets theatres in their wider social/urban/political contexts. Modern Playhouses relates existing knowledge of public architecture to the specific context of theatre-building. It is based on exhaustive study of archives, many never before examined, including the National Theatre but avoids a primarily London-centric approach.

Written Dr Alistair Fair, Lecturer in Architectural History at the University of Edinburgh, he specialises in British architecture since the First World War and has published extensively on theatre design.

ABTT Discount: Theatre Trust Conference 2019

We are pleased to support the Theatres Trust Conference 19: Centre Stage at Battersea Arts Centre on 15 October, which looks at how we ensure the needs of artists and audiences sit at the heart of our theatre buildings.

Theatres Trust Conference 19: Centre Stage will look at theatres from the perspective of the people they are there to serve. It will ask how we ensure serving the needs of artists and audiences sits at the centre of our theatre buildings.

ACTION NEEDED BY AFFILIATE ORGANISATIONS AND ISG MEMBERS:
Action Needed: Apprenticeship Trailblazers

The final push is on to recruit employers to the latest theatre and production Apprenticeship Trailblazer groups. We have the chance to create the following brand new Apprenticeship Standards for our industry:

  • Scenic Automation
  • Scenic Artist
  • Scenic Construction
  • Theatrical hair, makeup and prosthetics (which will be transferable across the Theatre, Film and TV sectors)

We need as many employers as possible to join each of these four new Trailblazer groups to ensure the Apprenticeship Standards genuinely serve the needs of the industry.

If we fail to supply a least  ten employers  for each Trailblazer – we risk loosing the ability to develop these standards.

Employers outside London are particularly required.

Please reply to the call for participants issued by CCSkills below:

New Apprenticeships Standards - Can you contribute your technical expertise?

Do you work in:

  • Scenic Automation
  • Scenic Artist
  • Scenic Construction
  • Theatrical hair, makeup and prosthetics (which will be transferable across the Theatre, Film and TV sectors)
If you, or your teams, are able to share expertise:
  •          They should ideally have a comprehensive understanding of the occupation the standard is being developed for;
  •          They will be supporting the process for circa 1 year, but you won’t be required to attend any more than 4 to 6 meetings in total.

Creative & Cultural Skills endeavours to make the process of developing new technical Apprenticeship standards as simple as possible for employers, so they manage all the associated paperwork and liaison with the Institute for Apprenticeships on the Trailblazer’s behalf.  You, the employers, simply need to provide your expertise!

If you are interested in being on any of the these three Trailblazer groups, please email Creative and Cultural Skills directly: creativecareers@ccskills.org.uk

OTHER NEWS:
Blackout Industry Evaluation:

Blackout is an immersive installation created by Guildford School of Acting lighting tutor Mig Burgess.

The installation harnesses the power of light, sound and video to portray what it feels like to have Bipolar II disorder and aims to affect the way people view mental health conditions.

Staged in a closed black box, Blackout is experienced alone for six minutes.

Important research is being conducted alongside Blackout, with Dr Paul Hanna of the University of Surrey asking people about their view on mental heath.

They are trying to gain a better understanding of mental health issues within the industry workforce and also to explore what could change to better support the industry workforce.

The survey should take 5-10 minutes, and your responses will be kept confidential and completely anonymous. Your participation is completely voluntary and you are free to withdraw at any point.

The evaluation is open until Monday 7th October.

Please fill in the Technical Backstage Entertainment Industry Mental Health Evaluation here.

Thank you again for your support.

ESTA Announces ANSI Approval of RDMnet!

On 27 August ANSI’s Board of Standards Review approved E1.33 RDMnet, as an American National Standard. It is now published and available on the ESTA website at tsp.esta.org/freestandards. The American National Standard designation is internationally recognized as a mark of technical diligence and commercial impartiality.

Officially known as ANSI E1.33 – 2019, Entertainment Technology – (RDMnet) Message Transport and Management for ANSI E1.20 (RDM) compatible and similar devices over IP Networks, the RDMnet standard was developed by the hard-working, all-volunteer members of the TSP’s Control Protocols' Working Group (CPWG).

RDMnet is a generational step forward, extending existing RDM functionality beyond the current physical limits of local DMX512 connections onto wide area hi-speed Ethernet networks. It allows for large-scale system monitoring and configuration while adding mobile device support. RDMnet also provides vendor agnostic configuration of network gateways, as well as system partitioning between multiple venues on the same Ethernet network. Multiple control consoles are now easily integrated and synchronized on the same control network.

For additional information, please contact standards@esta.org.

Three Draft ESTA Standards Available for Public Review

Three new or revised standards are available for public review on the ESTA TSP website at http://estalink.us/pr. Anyone materially affected by the documents is invited to review them and to offer comments before the deadline. The review documents are available for free. They are listed below in order of action due-date. Note that the reviews do not all end on the same day.

BSR E1.62, Minimum specifications for mass-produced portable platforms, ramps, stairs, and choral risers for live performance events,

BSR E1.4-3, Entertainment Technology Manually Operated Hoist Rigging Systems,

BSR E1.21, Entertainment Technology Temporary Structures Used for Technical Production of Outdoor Entertainment Events
