The ABTT offers a wide range of practical Technical Courses each year. These are scheduled throughout the year in Glasgow, Manchester, Warwick and London. Below we have listed to current courses available for booking. However, if these locations are not suited, we also run “in-venue” training courses at your preferred location. Our Courses:
We run a variety of courses, these include:
- Our Bronze Award which provides the basic skills required to progress as a Technician.
- Our Silver Awards Course, sat upon completion of Bronze, where you can specialise your expertise in areas such as Sound, Electrical and Stage roles.
- Our Gold Course, to be sat upon completion of a Silver Award or equivalent experience, is specifically for those in or moving towards managerial roles in the Industry including Pyrotechnics and PAT Testing.
- Our CPD Courses (Continuous Professional Development) which are practical one-day courses in a variety of subjects.
- Online training in a variety of topics including Mental Health, AutoCAD and Vectorworks.
We arrange courses throughout the year in various locations but actively recommend our members to get in touch to request a course to be run in their venue.

ABTT Bronze Award for Theatre Technicians
|
|
The ABTT Bronze Award is a five day course which gives candidates knowledge and understanding of best practice and provides you with a SCQF Level 7 qualification which is recognised throughout the Industry.
This practical Course which intertwines theory to ensure your day-to-day skills are validated with the correct technical knowledge to keep you and your colleagues safe.The course includes 'Manual Handling & Health & Safety at Work Act', 'Electrical Fundamentals', 'Knots & Splicing', 'Fundamentals of Flying' and 'Safe use of temporary access equipment'.
The cost of the course is:

The ABTT Silver courses were created to ensure that there was a relevant and recognized technical qualification for those wanting to develop their skills in a specialized area after completing the Bronze Award. The Silver Award is the second level of courses in a trio courses meant to both develop and solidify your skill set.
We offer Silver Courses in the following areas: Theatre Electrician, Stage Technician or Sound Engineer. Candidates wanting to pursue a Silver Award should have gained equivalent knowledge and skills covered by the Bronze Award prior to considering undertaking this course.
The cost of the course is:

The Gold Award is a two day course designed to support the candidate for a role in which they will have responsibility for the management of the working environment and the practices therein.
Candidates wishing to pursue the Gold Award should have attained a similar level of understanding and comprehension as achieved by pursuing the Bronze and Silver courses.

ABTT Gold Award for Theatre Technicians:
Running Saturday 6th - Sunday 7th August in Warwick

The course looks at the management of health, safety and welfare within the theatre and events industry.
DAY 1: Risk Management 1 – covering important aspects of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, including roles in emergency/disaster plans and attitudes towards theatre safety.
DAY 2: Technical Standards for Places of Entertainment – exploring the guidance. Risk Management 2- a practical session completing risk assessments.

What does the will I be able to do at the end of the course?
• Identify legal requirements for the provision of health, safety & welfare in the work place
• Identify sources of guidance for compliance with legal requirements
• Develop procedures to ensure adequate management of health, safety and welfare in the work place
• Undertake a comprehensive and detailed Risk Assessment
• Develop and record detailed method statements to achieve the control measures identified by a risk assessment.

ABTT Pyrotechnics Course:

The essential training for anyone intending to use stage pyrotechnics as part of a theatrical performance. Satisfactory completion of this course allows registration to the Association of Stage Pyrotechnicians.

The ABTT Stage Pyrotechnics Safety Awareness Course is a theatrical based, workshop style, training day. The course provides operational safety information from industry experienced tutors via ‘hands-on’ exercises and ‘live firing’ demonstrations.
The course focuses on the safety implications associated with the use of popular, publicly available, Stage Pyrotechnic devices.

The In-service Inspection for Lifting Gear course is a two day course which forms part of the Silver Award for Stage Technicians. This can be taken as a stand alone two day course or as part of the five day Silver Stage Award.

The course covers theory and regulations such as the Machinery Directive/Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations; Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER). We also cover the practical element of inspecting and using lifting gear.

ABTT In-service Inspection of Electrical Equipment (PAT) Course:
Running Thursday 11th August 2022, Warwick.

The In-service Inspection of Electrical Equipment (PAT) course is a one day that will set out systems to organise the in-service inspection and testing of theatre electrical equipment and how to comply with the Electricity at Work Regulations.
This course forms part of the ABTT Silver Award for Theatre Electricians Course, this one-day course may be taken as a part of the larger course or can be sat individually either within a scheduled course.

The course includes visual inspection and electrical testing; testing periods; record keeping; system of inspection and testing; selection of suitable testing instruments, inspection requirements and the need to ‘risk assess’ the requirement for inspections and test.The course also covers the use of hired equipment, examining where responsibilities lie with reference to the hire company and the hirer.

What is Mental Health First Aid? MHFA England training won’t teach you to be a therapist, but just like physical first aid, it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis.
Learning takes place through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions.

With an extensive suite of entertainment-focused drawing, modelling and rendering tools, Spotlight can produce detailed paperwork and presentations. Create an immersive experience with cutting-edge technology like virtual and augmented reality and rendered panoramas.
The course should take approximately 24 hours to complete, this will vary from person to person as it structured to allow you to you work at your own pace.

ABTT Online AutoCAD Training for Theatre Technicians :

The course is specifically tailored to the needs of users in a theatrical environment, it consists of six parts and is structured so you can create simple drawings after Part 1. The course will provide you with a foundation of skills, allowing you use the program straight away and build your knowledge.

This course is largely based on AutoCAD’s 2D functionality with a short bonus 3D tutorial at the conclusion of the course. It is used within the Theatre industry to develop technical drawings for a range of different uses. If you are on the technical drawing side of set or theatre design, this course is for you. The course should take approximately 10 hours to complete, this will vary from person to person as it structured to allow you to you work at your own pace.

Many of our courses are available throughout the year in various locations in the UK, but these can also be run on-demand via peripatetic delivery. Courses may be delivered anywhere within the UK, or abroad and the ABTT would welcome interested theatres or organisations who wish to act as a host venues to get in contact. There may be some specialist requirements depending on which courses you are interested in. For example, for the Bronze Award, we would require the ability to fly scenery using hemp or counterweight.
