Job Description

We are seeking a Design Intern to join our team from Autumn 2024 for 12 months. The Design Intern will be based in our London or Bristol Studio, assisting the Theatre Consulting EMEA business unit, Senior Consultants, and Consultants on spatial and/or technical design for the performing arts.

You will report to one of our Senior Consultants who, as your Line Manager and mentor, will arrange project assignments and provide ongoing training, professional development opportunities, and day to day guidance to help you learn and succeed in this highly specialised field. Prior experience in one of our specialist design disciplines is not required, but we are particularly keen to hear from those with a keen Audiovisual interest. Charcoalblue will tailor the internship to your individual interests and skills within the field of theatre consulting.

Apply if you…

  • Have an interest in the performing arts and would like to know more about the spatial or technical design aspect of spaces and buildings designed for the performing arts.
  • Enjoy learning and problem solving as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Want to gain experience in a friendly, international company based in a convenient London/Bristol location but with regular trips to our UK studios, and interaction with our international studios.
  • Have some CAD knowledge already and are willing and eager to expand your knowledge.

Desirable Skills

A positive attitude to learning is essential. In addition, having some of the following skills would also be an advantage:

  • AutoCAD/Microstation/Revit
  • 3D modelling – Revit/Sketch Up
  • Photoshop/InDesign
  • Model making

We look forward to receiving your application by 12th July 2024. We request all applications be submitted via our online system.

Employment Details

This is a fixed term (one year) full-time position. Our standard full-time working week is 40 hours (flexible between 8am and 8pm Monday-Friday), plus an hour per day (unpaid) for lunch, with an understanding that flexible working hours will apply to meet our clients’ needs and to accommodate the company’s global time zones. Charcoalblue does not provide for the payment of overtime. The nature of the job and the Partnership’s business could occasionally entail some work outside normal working hours.

There is a three-month probationary period.

We are currently working in a distributed (hybrid) model, meaning you will work from your home (or other place of your choosing) with an expectation to work out of our London or Bristol studio and/or client offices three days a week. Additionally, some site visits and project meetings may be in person, as required. We will provide you with the necessary IT hardware and software to enable you to carry out your role successfully in line with your duties.

Please note, although the role is distributed, the successful applicant must be based in the UK to effectively meet the current needs of our work and local team, and you should be able and willing to travel to external meetings and our UK studios as required, with notice.

Annual leave entitlement: We operate a Take-What-You-Need (TWYN) Leave Policy which means that with prior arrangement, there is an opportunity for employees to benefit from additional discretionary paid leave days over and above their statutory holiday/annual leave allowance. You will receive 20 days’ annual leave minimum (statutory) per annum (prorated in the first year), plus the UK statutory Bank Holidays. We traditionally close our studios between Christmas and New Year’s Day, resulting in an additional average 4-5 holiday days per annum.

Employee Benefits

Charcoalblue operates a bonus scheme which you will benefit from following successful completion of a three-month probationary period. Please note that this is subject to the Partnership’s performance year on year and is not guaranteed.

Following successful completion of your probationary period, you will be eligible to participate in our company benefits package, including our pension auto-enrolment scheme and allocation of live event tickets per month. We offer this benefit to encourage you to immerse yourself in the live events industry as far as possible. We will also contribute to your home broadband and give you a monthly contribution towards your home utilities to enable you to work from home effectively in line with our distributed working model. Other benefits are accumulative as you progress with the company.

Additional Benefits

  • Site visit(s) to professional entertainment facilities
  • Training and development provided by a world-class staff of consulting professionals
  • Opportunity for ongoing professional mentorship after the conclusion of the internship

Start Date
