Job Purpose

The Night Supervisor is responsible for supervising the stage department for all overnight calls and the successful completion of changeovers and other work calls.

The overnight work will occur for 4 -5 months of the year. The remainder of the year will be day calls.

Key Tasks/Responsibilities

  • To supervise staff on night shifts (and day shifts at certain times of the year) leading the changeovers and other night calls.
  • To ensure that all overnight changeovers and scenery repairs are completed successfully to be prepared for the following day’s rehearsal or show.
  • To meet any overnight requirements from other departments.
  • To compile detailed changeover/fit up notes for the Stage Department.
  • In conjunction with the other Stage Supervisors, to plan and coordinate all elements of scenery storage and construction throughout the year.
  • To manage (along with the Head of Stage) the recruitment, induction, training, development and appraisal of all night Stage Technicians.
  • To lead night shifts at other venues for Glyndebourne on tour.
  • To travel to support Glyndebourne hire Productions when necessary.
  • To maintain a clear flow of information between the stage and other relevant departments
  • Outside of the night shift period, to work alongside the other Stage Supervisors, carrying out other duties as required.
  • To manage a safe environment and lead on the best practice of Health and Safety, working alongside others in a safe and efficient manner.
  • To inform the Head of Stage of all issues relating to Health and Safety.
  • To develop a working knowledge of the Glyndebourne Repertoire
  • To undertake, if required, all manner of set refurbishment, painting, cleaning etc, and to assist in the maintenance of productions throughout their run.
  • To carry out all other duties where required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience
    Essential

  • Substantial Supervisor experience in a similar setting
  • Proven knowledge of theatre stagecraft
  • Solid supervisory and team leadership skills and experience; demonstrable ability to work effectively alone or as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with colleagues and staff at all levels
  • Excellent knowledge and practical experience of safe working practice within a theatrical environment
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and regulations
  • Ability to read technical drawings including AutoCad

Desirable

  • Driving Licence
  • Woodworking/Metalworking/Set painting skills
  • Good Computer based skills including Google Drive.
  • Stage automation knowledge.
  • Experience of inspection and use of rigging equipment
  • Industry certifications in Working at Height, Rigging, Health and Safety
  • Experience writing Risk Assessments and Method Statements

This is a Permanent, full time position, the contractual hours of work are 48 per week,(40 average during the night periods) for which we offer a Highly competitive rate of pay.

We offer 5.6 weeks’ holiday inclusive of bank holidays per annum.
We can offer excellent working facilities in a beautiful country setting. For those without their own transport we have a free minibus service to and from Lewes railway station.
