DESIGNATION OF ANY STAFF LINE MANAGED BY THE POST HOLDER: College technical team

The purpose of the post is, under the direction of the Head of Productions and/or the Dean, to manage the College’s technical team, equipment and facilities in support of its teaching, production and related activities.

Consistently contribute to creating positive outcomes for students by participating in initiatives and support that enhance the student experience, with measurable impact on students’ satisfaction and success as evidence by feedback and performance metrics.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Management
• Line-management of the College’s technical team
• Scheduling of technical team to meet the needs of teaching, production and related activities
• Ensuring the College’s workshops, theatres, laboratories and studios are maintained and kept up to date with current professional practice, planning and implementing developments and advising the College’s management on capital and resource requirements
• Directing the College’s technical team in ensuring the operation of health and safety requirements in their designated areas of responsibility

Technical support and logistics
• Ensuring that facilities and equipment are available and ready for use in accordance with College schedules and timetables
• Ensuring that academic staff have appropriate support in the use of teaching equipment and facilities
• Coordinating and undertaking the setting up and operating of equipment and facilities in support of College productions, events and other activities, on and off campus, and the work of visiting companies and practitioners
• Managing the reservation and booking out and in of equipment by staff and students for teaching and production activities
• Keeping inventories, technical specifications and other documentation accurate and up to date
• With the approval of the Head of Productions and/or the Dean or other relevant staff,
purchasing materials and equipment for productions, projects and classes, in accordance with College budgets and financial regulations
• Liaising with the Head of Productions and/or the Dean, academic staff, professional Directors and Designers, visiting tutors and others working on productions and projects
• Being a designated First Aider
Supervision and technical instruction
• Supervising students and other users of College equipment and facilities
• Providing technical instruction, advice and ongoing support to students, staff and other users including the delivery of workshops, demonstrations and advice sessions
• Providing guidance and competency testing of students and others in the use of technical equipment and facilities, in accordance with College policies and current professional methods and practices
• With relevant academic staff and under the direction of the Head of Productions, setting protocols and professional standards for students engaged in production and project work when using the College’s performance and production facilities

Health and Safety
• Ensuring appropriate standards of health and safety are maintained at all times
• Ensure the working methods employed by students and staff on campus are safe and appropriate at all times, according to the College’s policies and all regulatory requirements
• Ensuring compliance with safety standards and Health and Safety Regulations in the College’s workshops, theatres, laboratories, studios (permanent and temporary)
• Being first signatory for all production related risk assessments
• Maintaining inventories of safety equipment, systems and all equipment used in the College’s workshops, theatres, laboratories and studios (permanent or temporary) to ensure it is inspected and properly maintained prior to being used by students and staff (including, where appropriate, keeping records of equipment testing and maintenance)
• Instructing students and staff in the use of all safety equipment, and the safe and compliant operation of equipment used in the College’s workshops, theatres, laboratories and studios (permanent and temporary)
• Ensuring students and staff working in the College’s workshops, theatres, laboratories and studios (permanent and temporary) have received appropriate Health and Safety instruction and training, and are competent to undertake specific tasks in those areas
• Ensuring risk assessments are prepared and implemented to assist in protecting students, staff and the public from potentially hazardous working methods, processes and materials
• Regularly conducting safety training and education programmes, that covers the use of all safety equipment, the safe and compliant operation of equipment used in the College’s workshops, theatres, laboratories and studios (permanent and temporary)
• Recommending and attending a minimum of two appropriate external health and safety training courses per year
• Ensure the College’s technical team attend a minimum of two appropriate health and safety courses per year

Maintenance
• Ensuring that equipment and facilities are maintained in a safe, tidy and useable condition, in accordance with the College’s procedures and statutory requirements
• Being responsible for the security of equipment and facilities

Industry Practice
• Keeping up to date with evolving industry practices and standards, including undergoing training where appropriate, and identifying and arranging training for the College’s technical team
• Keeping up to date with health and safety, and other legislation, to ensure that staff, students and others are compliant when using College teaching and production equipment and facilities
• Advising on evolving industry technologies and practices, to ensure that the College’s teaching and production equipment and facilities remain up to date and appropriate

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
The post holder will be expected to work flexibly, including evenings and weekends, as agreed with the post holder’s line manager. The post holder is expected to hold a current driving licence.
All staff are expected to comply with the College’s Health and safety and Equal Opportunities policies in the performance of their duties.
Requirement to complete annually all statutory training using the ON LINE training service. The People and Talent Department will provide you with a personal login.

The post-holder may be required to undertake any other duties which may reasonably be required as within the nature of the duties and responsibilities of the post as defined, subject to the proviso that normally any changes of a permanent nature shall be incorporated into the Job Description in specific terms.
