Job Description

The Theatre Technician reports to the Technical Manager for Shakespeare North Playhouse The Theatre Technician will work closely with the Head of Production, Technical Manager, Senior Theatre Technician and freelance Technicians to ensure a cohesive, efficient and safe operation is in place at the venue.

Place of Work The place of work will be Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot, Knowsley. Occasionally work will be required at alternative locations including partners with whom Shakespeare North co-produces.

Salary and Hours of work Your hours of work will vary according to the needs of the business, and you are required to be flexible to the company’s requirements. You will work an average of 40 hours per week between Monday and Sunday, evening and weekend work will be required. Time off in lieu maybe granted in line with the companies TOIL policy.

The full-time salary will be £26,000 per annum.

Main Duties:

  •  To carry out work associated with; Get-In, Fit-Ups and Get-Ou
  • Deliver high quality technical support for productions & events taking place in the theatre, performance and event spaces.
  • Set up and operate lighting, sound and multimedia equipment for performances and events.
  • Assist with the set up and operate flying and rigging systems including hemp set, powered flying bars, manual and electric hoists.
  • Liaise with relevant departments and individuals as required and when assigned work in roles such as duty technician, lighting designer or sound designer.
  •  Provide technical and creative support to all users of the theatre and performance and learning spaces.
  •  Assist during production weeks to ensure the production, rehearsals and production process run smoothly.
  •  Provide first-line maintenance support for all relevant technical equipment, machines, furniture, fixtures and fittings.
  • Ensure all equipment is used and stored safely.
  •  To undertake maintenance duties across the building and other spaces used by Shakespeare North Trust as required.
  •  Ensure the workplace adheres to health and safety requirements and maintain an excellent standard of housekeeping.
  •  Ensure all health and safety requirements are adhered to by staff, freelancers & visitors in the use of the theatre, performances and event spaces and produce.
  • Attend training as required and maintain awareness of health and safety regulations specific to the spaces and equipment used.
  •  Act as First Aider when required
  •  Undertake any other reasonable duties, commensurate with the level of the post to ensure the smooth running of Shakespeare North Playhouse.

 

Skills and Experience Essential:

  • Experience of working in a professional backstage environment
  •  Experience in stage, flying systems, lighting, sound or video and have a good working knowledge of the other disciplines.
  •  Up to date knowledge of stage, flying, rigging, lighting or sound equipment and its maintenance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to communicate clearly and consistently with all theatre and event space users, especially non-technical users.
  •  Ability to work independently but also willing to collaborate across many departments and work as part of a team.
  • Confident in manual-handling/heavy lifting of theatre equipment, working at height and able to do so safely.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, overnight and weekends as required.
  •  A passion and commitment to the Arts.

 

Desirable

  • Experience in implementing health and safety requirements and risk assessments
  •  Formal qualification in technical theatre or stage management discipline
  •  Experience of operating or programming ETC EOS family desks
  •  Experience of operating or programming DigiCo Sound Desks
  •  First Aid Qualification
  •  Full-clean driving license
  •  iPAF Qualification
  •  Experience of PAT testing
  •  Understanding of Temporary Electrical Systems
