ABTT Stephen Joseph Award Nominees Announced!

Dear ABTT Members,

The ABTT Awards are one of the Association’s flagship events and this year we are very pleased to be presenting our newest addition, the ABTT Stephen Joseph Award!

To mark the centenary year of Stephen Joseph’s birth and the 60th anniversary of the founding of ABTT, this award was created to honour Stephen’s wide-ranging legacy, which reaches many aspects of theatre practice.

This year the ABTT Theatre Show is being run alongside the PLASA Show at Olympia, London on the 5th-7th September 2021, where we will take the opportunity to celebrate those amazing people and organisations in our industry.

As such the ABTT will be presenting their brand new ABTT Stephen Joseph Award alongside the established ABTT Technician of the Year Award and the Award for Emerging Excellence at this must attend event with the announcement of the winners to be made on the 5th September 2021.

The deadline for the Stephen Joseph Award has now closed, so please see below the fantastic nominations we have received this year.

The ABTT Stephen Joseph Award has been added to our Awards for 2021 to to commemorate the life and work of the maverick theatrical genius.

Stephen Joseph was one of the most influential theatre practitioners of the last century. He was a founding father of ABTT and the Society of Theatre Consultants. He promoted new writing, architectural standards and technical excellence. His pioneering work has given rise to the myriad forms of theatre and open staging that are commonly used today. At the heart of his practice was the close and fundamental relationship between performer and audience. Above all, he established theatre in the round as a legitimate form of theatre in the U.K.

There are three categories from which one candidate best reflecting Stephen’s legacy will be chosen.

The winner of the ABTT Stephen Jospeh Award will receive a certificate of achievement, a physical award to display with their name engraved upon it and they will be celebrated in the ABTT’s journal of record Sightline magazine.

ABTT Stephen Joseph Award Nominees:

Thirteen nominations have been received for the inaugural ABTT Stephen Joseph Award recognising individuals, companies and buildings in diverse locations including Belfast; Bolton; London; Portstewart; Sheffield; Suffolk and more.
