Call to Action: Research Invitation for Black Backstage Theatre Professionals
1 September 2026
Take part in Arts Council funded research into the experiences of Black backstage theatre professionals.
Laura Duckett, writer and composer is developing a stage production inspired by the lives of extraordinary 18th-century Caribbean revolutionaries who fought against the transatlantic slave trade, alongside the remarkable Chevalier de Saint-Georges: a biracial composer, virtuoso violinist and celebrated French fencer.
Alongside the production, they have received Arts Council funding to conduct research into the experiences of Black backstage theatre professionals and to organise two London-based career development events focused on networking, knowledge-sharing and practical support.
The events will be aimed specifically at early-career backstage theatre professionals who identify as Black, with a focus on:
- Lighting and sound technicians
- Costume and set designers
They want to make sure the events genuinely respond to the needs and experiences of the people they are intended to support. They are therefore asking potential participants to complete a short survey, which will help shape the content, speakers and format of the events.
The survey takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. At the end, you can also leave your email address if you would like to hear when bookings open.
