2 December 2025
ESTA’s Technical Standards Program has posted six standards for public review. Submit comments on any of them before the review period ends on 29 December 2025.
One draft revision from the Event Safety Working Group
BSR ES1.4, Event Fire Safety Requirements
This standard is a revision of the currently published 2021 version. It applies to fire safety in the live event industry. Fire safety is the identification and assessment of event-specific fire risks, and the effects that fire and smoke will have to the life safety of all persons who may be affected. It includes those measures required to minimize the likelihood of a fire starting, means of escape (egress), fire safety monitoring, and the methods used to limit the development, spread, and effects of fire. This standard does not address (a) requirements related to certifying fire fighters and their associated training; (b) requirements related to the construction of firefighting equipment; (c) requirements related to the construction, use, and maintenance of motorized fire fighting apparatus; (d) technical requirements of any equipment used for communications, illumination, signs or other hardware; or (e) installation of fixed fire alarm and suppression systems.
Two draft revisions from the Rigging Working Group
BSR E1.6-1, Powered Hoist Systems
This is a revision of the currently published 2021 version. It establishes requirements for the design, manufacture, installation, inspection, and maintenance of powered hoist systems for lifting and suspension of loads for performance, presentation, and theatrical production. It does not apply to the structure to which the hoist is attached, to attachment of loads to the load carrying device, or to systems for flying people. Welded link chain hoists, and manually powered hoists, including auxiliary drill operation are also excluded from its scope.
BSR E1.6-3, Selection and Use of Serially Manufactured Chain Hoists in the Entertainment Industry
This draft version is a revision of the currently published 2019 standard. It establishes minimum safety requirements for the selection and use of serially manufactured electric link-chain hoists in the entertainment industry. This standard is intended to reduce injury and provide for the protection of life, limb and property. This standard does not address the design or maintenance of these hoists.
Two revisions and one new draft standard from the Control Protocol Working Group
BSR E1.27-2, Entertainment Technology – Recommended Practice for Permanently Installed Control Cables for Use with ANSI E1.11 (DMX512-A) and USITT DMX512/1990 Products
E1.27-2 covers cables permanently installed to carry control messages conforming to ANSI E1.11 and USITT DMX512. This version is a revision of the currently published standard.
BSR E1.37-7, Additional Message Sets for E1.20 (RDM) Gateway and Splitter Configuration
This standard provides additional Get/Set Parameter Messages for use with the E1.20 Remote Device Management protocol [RDM] and ANSI E1.33 RDMnet protocol [RDMnet]. It contains messages relating to configuring managed splitters, proxy devices, and RDMnet Devices. Reviewers are encouraged to perform actual testing in accordance with the standard’s requirements while evaluating the document text.
BSR E1.37-8-202x, Entertainment Technology – IPv4 and IPv6 Network Configuration Messages for E1.20 RDM
This new draft standard provides configuration messages for common IPv4/IPv6 and related network settings in devices that use the Remote Device Management suite of communications (ANSI E1.20 RDM and ANSI E1.33 RDMnet). Reviewers are encouraged to perform actual testing in accordance with the document’s requirements while evaluating the text.
