STR online event: Theatres Trust – Theatres at Risk Update

Founded in 1976, the Theatres Trust is the national advisory public body for theatre buildings. It has assisted theatres throughout the pandemic crisis with their Theatre Reopening Fund grants, #SaveOurTheatres Crowdfunder campaign and free special advice services.

As part of its remit, the Theatres Trust creates its annual Theatres at Risk Register, celebrating its 15th year in 2022. The Register supports theatres under threat of demolition, redevelopment or permanent closure and calls public attention to these buildings. Every theatre on the list has strong architectural or cultural heritage and, crucially, the potential to be returned to performance use and be a real asset to its community.

Claire Appleby is the Architecture Advisor at the Theatres Trust. Claire manages the Theatres at Risk work, advises on theatre-related capital redevelopments, and is responsible for the delivery of the Trust’s Advisory Review. Claire studied architecture at the University of Sheffield and has worked for renowned practices including Panter Hudspith Architects, Burrell Foley Fischer LLP, and Bennetts Associates. Claire has experience working on new build and refurbishment projects, both within the arts sector and on heritage buildings, including projects for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Hall in Harrogate. Claire joined the Trust in June 2015.
