Job Description

Head of Workshops is a pivotal leadership role at the heart of our Production Team, driving the creation of ambitious productions from concept to stage through expert craftsmanship, innovation, and collaboration.

This role leads the management of all workshop areas (woodwork, metal, and props), ensuring the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of scenic construction, fabrication, maintenance, and repair. Working closely with the Technical Director, Designers, and Heads of Department, you will oversee operations, staff, resources, and build schedules to deliver productions on time and within budget to the required artistic and technical standards. You will lead and develop your teams, allocate resources effectively, and provide practical technical solutions, while overseeing the construction and maintenance of scenic elements, monitoring workloads and materials, and ensuring safe use of equipment. The role also includes responsibility for budgets, procurement, stock control, and maintaining accurate project documentation to support efficient operations. You will champion sustainable practices to reduce waste and environmental impact, lead on staff training and performance management, and ensure robust risk assessments and safe systems of work are in place.

We’re looking for an experienced scenic construction professional with strong leadership skills and a solid background in workshop management or theatre production. You’ll bring advanced timber and metal fabrication expertise, confidently interpret technical drawings, and uphold excellent health and safety standards. Highly organised and able to manage multiple projects at pace, you’ll communicate clearly, solve problems creatively, and champion sustainability and continuous improvement.
