Job Description

The Lighting Technician will participate in the effective and efficient delivery of Dundee Rep & Scottish Dance Theatre’s (DRSDT) lighting services.

The post holder will work within the Production Department and, as such, is expected to make a positive contribution to the development of the Lighting Department, Production Department and to the success of the company as a whole.

The Lighting Technician will be responsible to the Chief Electrician and will have key relationships with the Production Team members, Creative Team members, Engage Team members, external collaborators and suppliers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Responsible, under the supervision of the Chief Electrician, for the provision of lighting services and to ensure the safe, effective, and efficient running of all lighting aspects of DRSDT’s productions.
• Lighting desk programming and operation (ETC EOS family) for in-house productions and visiting companies.
• Rigging and focusing lighting fixtures and other equipment for in-house and visiting productions.
• Operation of lighting on tour or transferred productions may be required.
• Deputising for the Chief Electrician when required.

Key Tasks

• Operation and maintenance of lighting fixtures and other electrical equipment for in-house and visiting productions.
• General maintenance, servicing and cleaning of all electrical equipment within the Lighting Department, including annual PAT testing.
• Responsible for a safe working environment within and around the building.
• You will be required to have a flexible approach to working hours. You may be required to work late, at weekends and on public holidays.
• To promote and participate in an alert and positive approach to Health and Safety in the delivery of all DRSDT’s lighting services, in accordance with the company’s Health and Safety policy.
• Working as an effective member of the Lighting Department within the Production Department, contributing to the development of the department as a whole.
• To manage the use, maintenance, repair and renewal of all lighting equipment and accessories in use across the organisation.
• Assisting within the Production Department to manage and organise the storage of lighting equipment stock within the Theatre’s stores, and ensuring re-use and recycling, where possible, of such elements.
• Actively participating in any installations, get-ins, fit-ups, get-outs and break-ups as scheduled for DRSDT productions.

Departmental

• In the absence of the Chief Electrician, acting as the senior point of contact within the Lighting Department for staff and external partners and leading on projects.
• Actively promoting safe working practices within the Lighting and Production Department.
• Promoting flexible working practices within the Lighting team.
• Facilitating effective communications within the Production Department and between the Lighting team and other teams across the organisation.

Environmental

• To support the organisation, Production Department and Green Team in meeting organisational aims and ambitions for environmental impact.
• To support the implementation of the organisation’s Environmental Policy and sustainability within the Production Department.

Health & Safety

• Promoting and participating in an alert and positive approach to Health and Safety, complying with DRSDT’s Health and Safety policy and all relevant Health and Safety legislation.
• Maintaining lighting equipment and reporting any required repairs to the Chief Electrician.
• Assisting in ensuring that the COSHH Register is kept up to date.
• Attending training as required to update knowledge and skills, and to comply with relevant statutory requirements to a high standard.

Other

• Any other reasonable requests by the Head of Production or Chief Electrician to ensure the general smooth and efficient operation of the Lighting and Production Department.

Person Specification

LIGHTING TECHNICIAN

Essential

If you do not demonstrate that you meet all the below criteria in your application, you may not be shortlisted.

1. At least 2 years’ experience in a lighting department within the performing arts industry.
2. Practical experience of working within a lighting department in a theatre environment.
3. Working knowledge of common electrical lighting practice in a theatre setting.
4. Experience in interpreting and working with technical drawings.
5. Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

Desirable

If we need to choose between candidates who meet the essential criteria, we may take the below factors into account.

1. Knowledge and experience of current Health and Safety issues and practice within the UK performing arts industry.
2. Operation and understanding of QLab software and OSC (Open Sound Control).
3. An understanding and experience of electrical soldering.
4. Experience and training to BS7909 (Temporary Power Systems).
5. Comfortable working at height and using access equipment such as ladders and a Tallescope.
6. A valid IPAF ticket (3a mobile vertical).
7. A valid PASMA ticket for the use of towers.
8. A clean UK driving licence.
9. Experience of working directly with creative personnel.
10. IT literate.
