Job description

The Barbican theatre presents an ambitious programme that crosses art forms, with outstanding artists and performers. Our Systems & Maintenance department is a small team of 4 that looks after the theatre’s infrastructure and facilities. The main house theatre is a proscenium style auditorium seating 1100 people. The Pit theatre is a manoeuvrable space seating up to 200 people. At times we are required to undertake specialised projects relating to incoming productions.

The department is also responsible for the maintenance and compliance of the access equipment, rigging tackle and automated systems within the theatres, e.g. flying system, stage lifts etc. Training will be provided in these areas.

We are looking for a skilled Technician to join our busy Systems & Maintenance team. The successful candidate will work across disciplines such as engineering, electrical, carpentry and plumbing.

This position requires individuals to use their initiative and work without supervision. The successful candidate should demonstrate a good understanding of relevant Health & Safety issues, as well as having the ability to climb ladders and lift heavy equipment. It is also essential that the post holder can communicate effectively with co-workers, artists and members of the public. The Technician will take on a supervisory role of casual staff from time to time as required. Experience of working within theatres or a recognized trade qualification would also be an advantage.

The role will work predominately Monday to Friday, 35 hrs per week, so would suit an experienced theatre Technician who prefers not to work evenings and weekends. However, flexibility to work some evenings and weekends will be required, which is paid at overtime.
