Theatre Green Book Impact Report

27 November 2025

Findings from the Big Theatre Green Book survey 2025

Theatre Green Book is an industry-wide initiative to work more sustainably in response to the climate crisis. It is a free resource for everyone in the performing arts, working
in any role and at all scales, providing a framework for planning, best practice guidance, a measurement system and shared standards.

The 2025 Impact Report, out now, provides evidence that Theatre Green Book has helped normalise sustainability as a shared language, shifting mindsets and working cultures.

The study is based on a nationwide survey of individuals and organisations. It shows that conversations about environmental impact are increasingly part of the day-to-day ways of working for many, with climate considerations embedded into decision making. It has also driven tangible environmental improvements, and enhanced creativity on and off stage. The report also highlights systemic factors that create challenges to progress. Key findings include:

• 84% of respondents feel confident using Theatre Green Book resources and 85% find them accessible.
• Personal motivation is driving change, with over 90% expressing personal commitment and a sense of responsibility to the aims of Theatre Green Book.
• Freelancers are key agents of progress, yet least resourced with dedicated training, funding and visibility. Just 5% of individuals say they have adequate levels of support.
• Organisations are embedding change, particularly at the Basic Theatre Green Book standard, but only 16% of organisations said that they have the time and resources to implement the guidance effectively. They can also be hindered by leadership buy-in, short schedules, limited capital funding and supply chain infrastructure.
