With a history spanning over 50 years, Bournemouth Film School (BFS) sits at the heart of Arts University Bournemouth and brings together the disciplines of acting; animation; costume; creative writing; dance, movement and creative practice; film production; games art and design; and make-up, hair and prosthetics. Courses are modelled on contemporary industry practice, contextualised by a philosophy of practical learning in an academic environment.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Set Construction Technician Demonstrator with significant experience in carpentry, joinery and scenic construction for theatre, film or television production. The successful candidate will play a key role in the construction, installation and dismantling of sets and scenic elements, supporting both teaching activities and student productions across Bournemouth Film School.

You will provide practical expertise and guidance to students and staff, helping to translate set designs into safe, functional and high-quality built environments. Confident in the use of woodworking machinery, hand and power tools, you will be able to interpret design plans, manage materials effectively and support all stages of the set build process from fabrication through to installation and strike.

A key responsibility of the role is the promotion of safe working practices. You will create risk assessments, deliver health and safety inductions and equipment training, ensure compliance with relevant legislation and University policies, and maintain a safe, well-organised workshop environment. You will also support the inspection, maintenance and safe operation of tools, machinery and workshop facilities.

Working closely with academic and technical colleagues, you will support learning and teaching through demonstrations, workshops and project supervision, helping students develop industry-standard construction skills. In addition, you will contribute to the management of workshop resources, materials and equipment, ensuring they remain available, serviceable and fit for purpose.

This role would suit an experienced set builder, carpenter or joiner with a passion for craftsmanship, health and safety, and supporting the next generation of creative practitioners.

Ideally educated to undergraduate degree level, you must hold a minimum level 3 qualification in a relevant subject, and GCSE, minimum grade C/5 or equivalent, English and Maths. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in continuous professional development to ensure subject knowledge and experience is maintained in-line with technology developments and industry trends.

Experience of supporting learners in a further or higher education context would be advantageous.

You will need to be flexible in your approach to the working day and environment as this varied post supports a diverse range of individuals and will entail evening and weekend working. Travel between university sites, and to venues and filming locations will be necessary, for which holding a full UK driving licence, or being able to obtain one within a specified period following appointment is essential.
